Project Summary

The project is located in Colombia. Considering the working environment of street lighting there and also the budget of the project, we customized a lighting solution with our Pallas Series and Apollo 2 Series to suit the needs, and over 50,000 PCS were installed.

Our partner has been operating it according to Energy Management Contract (EMC) since 2019. 3 years have already passed, and both our partner and the local government are very satisfied with the excellent solution we designed for them.

The Challenge

• In 2018, our engineering team flew to Colombia to do an on-site consulting. We learned that the local environment was rather harsh, with major weather factors such as heavy precipitation and storm surges occurring most time of the year. Therefore, the street light fixture needs protection against rainfalls.
• Thunderstorms also often occur in the cities every year and cause voltage surges in the electrical circuit. What’s more, the voltage fluctuated frequently since there was no central power supply system for public lighting in the city. Also, no earth wire access to provide an electrical connection to the ground.
• The local government particularly emphasized the importance of saving energy and also required a higher lighting uniformity level.

Our Solution

• Considering the harsh weather like heavy rain there, we modified the fixture to protect it against powerful water jets, and then also performed stringent tests to ensure that it met all the test requirements of the IP 66 rating.
• The thunderstorm comes with rain, thunder, and also a number of lightning strikes. Lightning strikes generate surge voltage in the electrical circuit, transmit a momentary high voltage impulse to the electrical devices inside the fixture, and thus do damage to the street light. To deal with the problem in voltage created by thunderstorms and the lack of a central power supply system, we used high-quality 120-277V LED drivers with built-in safety features, and offered multiple protection devices to satisfy the needs as well.
• To meet the criteria of this project, we optimized the lighting solution with high efficiency LED 5050, and improved the materials in the lens as well. Meanwhile, we offered support in the whole RETILAP certification process to make sure that our partner obtained the certificate promptly.
