Project Summary

The project is located in Malaysia. The competition was super intense. In the last round of the bidding, we contended with other world-renowned suppliers from 7 different countries for this project, and Kingsun was the only supplier from China that was evaluated and met all the criteria. With a proven track record of delivering projects within scope, time, budget, and quality, Kingsun beat all other strong rivals in the end. With the hard work of our teams, we completed the project accurately and satisfactorily, and it is also the very first highway LED street lighting project in Malaysia.

In addition, this project was highly acclaimed by the local government. Since then, Kingsun has continued to win more projects there, and so far has deployed about 100,000 LED street lights in Malaysia.

The Challenge

• Located close to the equator, Malaysia has a classic tropical rainforest climate, with high temperatures and a lot of rainfall throughout the year. Humidity and rain are common features there, thus street light fixtures have to be made waterproof to protect them against water jets like rain.
• In Malaysia, lightning strikes are another very common occurrence due to its tropical climate and location. Surge voltage in the electrical circuit caused by lightning strikes can be harmful to the electrical devices inside the fixture, thus disrupting the function of street lights.
• Local government demanded higher energy efficiency, at least 40%. Also, it had a rigorous requirement for illuminance, luminance levels, and lateral light distribution. These are important factors that enable the safety of pedestrians and vehicle drivers on the road. Besides, interferences such as trees and lighting from other sources in the environment need to be considered as well.

Our Solution

• To overcome the heavy rainfall during the year, we improved the structure of the fixture to reduce water ingress and enhance the waterproof ability, and then we also did multiple tests such as rain tests in our laboratory repeatedly to ensure that the fixture could comply with the standards of IP66.
• In order to solve the problem developed by thunderstorms there, we installed surge protection device in the fixture and also provided high-quality 120-277V LED drivers with built-in safety features.
• We developed a lighting solution by using our Apollo-1 Series with CREE LED to meet all the criteria. Also, we adopted different techniques of lighting distribution to provide sufficient illumination for a variety of applications such as slopes and bends in the road. Besides, we increased RA up to 80 to deliver a more accurate color rendering for maximum visibility and uniformity, avoiding accidents during the night and improving the safety of public transportation there.
